Innovative photoelectrocatalytic water remediation system for ammonia abatement

Ammonia, produced by human and animal activities, contributes to water soil pollution because it is toxic for aquatic flora fauna, responsible eutrophication. In this work, the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation of ammonia investigated employing a stainless-steel PEC reactor, consisting central UV Hg-vapor lamp surrounded metallic Ti mesh coated with photoactive TiO2 film, directly grown Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO). The so prepared film characterized XRD, SEM, UV–vis DRS IPCE. reactor operates at 4 V potential drop between (photoanode) body (cathode). effect operating parameters (recirculation flowrate air bubbling) type electrolyte solution (KCl or K2SO4) on performance are in terms conversion selectivity nitrite, nitrate molecular nitrogen. Full (XNH3) nitrogen up 67 % attained after 12 h 5 mM KCl solution. Nitrite within first 6 irradiation then fully converted into nitrate. By contrast, only slight XNH3 (ca. 10 %) observed K2SO4 These results suggest that chlorine has crucial role process: photo-generated holes photoanode surface can oxidize Cl? Cl• (electro-induced process), which reactive radical able oxidase ammonia.
